LANSING – State Representative Sarah Roberts (D-St. Clair Shores) on Wednesday was named Clean Water Action's 2009 New Lawmaker of the Year, one of seven statewide awards honoring prominent lawmakers, citizens, leaders and volunteers who work to protect our state's natural treasures and create a clean energy economy for Michigan.
"I am honored to receive an award for the work I've done defending something that I truly love about Michigan," said Roberts, a member of the House Great Lakes and Environment Committee. "I consider myself very lucky to have a job that gives me the opportunity to be active in working with others to protect the natural resources that make our state unique. I'd like to thank Clean Water for the work it does every day."
As a member of the House Great Lakes and Environment Committee and a former community organizer with Clean Water Action, Roberts understands how essential it is to protect what makes Michigan so special. The following are just some of the plans that Roberts has supported to keep our water clean:
- Ending mercury pollution in Michigan
- Limiting phosphorus in lawn fertilizer
- Combating invasive species in our lakes
Clean Water Action is Michigan's largest environmental organization, widely known throughout the state for mobilizing public support for environmental and public health policies.
"Sarah's been an outstanding advocate for protecting all of Michigan's water – from Lake St. Clair to our Great Lakes," said Cyndi Roper, Executive Director of Michigan Clean Water Action. "She's taken her fight to protect our natural resources to the state level, and continues to work hard every day to ensure our land, air and water."
